Colouring as a stress buster

Colour on!

Did you know that engaging in colouring has been known to provide numerous benefits. Colouring is often encouraged as a basic skill for young children learning to colour. It helps develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. Colouring an intricate pattern appears to be especially effective. The Know Your Art kits engages its user to create some wonderful art along with taking in a slice of history or learning about a new movement in art.

A recent study that evaluated students found that spending time colouring complex artworks was helpful at reducing anxiety. Susan Alberts, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic and the author of ‘50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food’, described colouring as a “mini mental vacation”. When we focus on the texture of the paper and choose colours that please us, it becomes easier to tune out distractions and helps us stay in the moment, she said.
