Art Explorer / Museum visit:
The Indigo Touch, Ahmedabad
Its the onset of spring and I am in the city of my ancestors, Ahmedabad. With ample of time on hand, I had already seen and visited my usual hangouts. I had heardabout a new museum, the Arvind Indigo Museum being set up. The brain child of Mr. Sanjay Lalbhai, whose Arvind group has emerged a forerunner as the largest denim producer in the world, this museum should definitely be high on your list if you plan a visit to this textile city.
The space, adjoining the army cantonement area and old Ahmedabad, Shahibaug is dotted with heritage properties and green pockets.
The exhibit on view, Alchemy highlights the versatile properties of this unique dye indigo. Master craftsmen, contemporary artists and designers have responded to the pigment in myriad ways – whether it is through weaves and painting or furniture, sculpture and installation. Artists such as Alwar Subramaniam, Nalini Malani, GR Iranna, Pandit Bhila Khairnar, Kavin Mehta, Manisha Parekh along with international contemporaries like Annie Morris and Gregor Hilderbrandt make this exhibit a spectacular one. Children would enjoy the large outdoor spaces, indigo dyed threads, birds and many such installations along with the many unique artworks. Do visit the Kasturbahi Lalbhai Musuem, Shahibaug.
